Survey Shows Link Between Kitchen Satisfaction and Family Happiness

by Maricar on November 9th, 2005

Ooo, ooo! You just gotta see these stats!

A worldwide survey conducted by IKEA through GALLUP International shows a link between the satisfaction people get from their kitchens and their happiness at home. Survey participants in the Netherlands were the happiest with their kitchens, and were also the most satisfied with their relationships with their spouses and children.

“Clearly, the kitchen has practical importance in every day living, but our survey really demonstrated that the kitchen can be a key factor in the happiness of the home,” said IKEA design specialist, Janice Simonsen. “We found a strong connection between overall satisfaction with the kitchen and harmony in relationships with spouses and children.”

Our kitchens have a central part in a lot of activities in the home. We do all sorts of stuff in it; it’s not just for cooking anymore. We do crafts, talk about our day with household members, and even argue, right there among the pots and pans!

Other interesting results from the survey include:
- the differences between how women and men define their dream kitchen
- the most coveted kitchen feature worldwide … an island (we have one!)
- how many kitchens have a “junk drawer”
- how many cooks wear aprons, and how many wear, um, their birthday suits

Italian cuisine comes out as the world’s favorite. Funny enough, Belgians like American cuisine even more than Americans do!
