Sources for Cheap (or Free!) Plants

Having a nice-looking garden doesn’t have to come with a high price. There are several ways the frugal gardener can get plants for free. Some of these are:
* Websites like Craigslist and Freecycle. You can ask for specific plants that you’re looking for and other gardeners are trying to get rid of.
* Your local landscapers. Some of them may have plants they’ve dug up on jobs and are going to throw away anyway.
* Your neighborhood nursery. Plants that they’re unable to sell might be worth salvaging for your own garden.
* Garden clubs. Plant swaps are a popular way for gardeners to increase their collections.

Another great way is grow your own. Take the dead flower head from a plant you like and inside is usually seeds. Plant them, feed them, water them and there you go. Marigolds work really well this way.

Adding to what Joe said, you can also very often ask for a “baby plant” from, say, spider plant, or pinch a leaf from certain ones like begonia, put it into water and wait until it grows roots, then grow!

I placed an ad to remove “weeds” for free from yards nearby. I got some terrific plants that way! What is one person’s weed is an exotic plant to someone else!
