Scrap Paper Christmas Tree

by Maricar on November 28th, 2006

I got this idea from the Imagination Project Blog. They used cotton art tape to make their tree. I’m frugal so I used what every scrapbooker has tons of… leftover patterned paper! Here are the materials and steps for my Scrap Paper Christmas Tree:

1″ strips of patterned paper, cut into 3″ lengths
styrofoam tree form
low-temp glue gun
gold paper for the star
toothpick

Steps:

1. For each piece of paper, glue the ends together to make a loop. You can make all the loops at once or as you adhere them to the tree, it’s up to you.

2. Beginning at the bottom of the tree, glue the first row of loops to the tree, putting adhesive only on the non-loop ends. The loop end should be level with the bottom of the tree.

3. For the next row and all succeeding rows, glue the loops about half an inch higher than the ones below, overlapping as you go. Continue until you reach the top of the tree.

4. Cut or punch a circle the same size as the top of the tree. Glue it down.

5. Trace and cut two stars from the gold paper. Glue them together, gold side out, with a toothpick in between.

6. Stick the toothpick into the top of your tree.

* You can also use sewing pins to attach your loops to the tree, as they did on the Imagination Project Blog. I have little kids in my house, so the safer way was to use the glue gun (which made it very stable too!).

* For this tree, which is now presumably sitting in my husband’s office desk, I used whatever scrap patterned paper I had available. I’m making at least one more, using all red or all green paper.

Have fun! I’d love to see your creations, so please feel free to send me a link to a photo (maricar at b5media dot com).

Update:You can also use scrap fabric to make the tree. Or ribbons, if you have enough of them. ;)
