Keeping the Castle - Housekeeping & Homemaking Tips

Post-Partum Housekeeping

I don’t know how I’ll keep up with keeping house now that the new baby is here. I’ve had a pretty good system in place before he came. Right now, I’m not so overwhelmed since my parents are still here with us. But once they go back home, it will be an entirely new ballgame. An active toddler and a newborn … it’s a whole new mix. It will be interesting and challenging. But I’m sure we’ll work something out.

I realized, with my parents being here, just how much of a difference it makes when extra help is available during the post-partum period. I can compare the time I had my firstborn with today. This time around, I’ve been able to concentrate on my own recovery and caring for the new baby without having to think of meals, laundry and cleaning. What a difference indeed! (Thanks, Ma and Dad!)

If you’re expecting a baby, try to round up someone to help around the house at least during the first two weeks. The new mommy ideally should be allowed to rest, provided with hot nutritious meals on time, and given the chance to recover from the physical and emotional stresses of labor and delivery. If you’re not able to have this luxury, here are some suggestions I can give:

1. Prioritize. I’d suggest that meals come first, then laundry. All others, ie. cleaning and organizing, can wait.

2. Use paper plates and disposable cutlery.

3. If you can cook ahead of time, do so and freeze meals that are easy to reheat. Commercial microwaveable meals are not in the same league as frozen homemade dishes. You can also make use of franchises that allow you to prepare the dishes for cooking at home.
