Personal Chefs: A Growing Trend
Busy professionals don’t have to “miss out on eating nutritious meals” just because they don’t have the time to cook them at home.
Consider the personal chef. Hiring a professional in-home caterer is a growing trend.
According to the United States Personal Chef Association, the industry boasts more than 5,000 personal chefs in operation.
Services can be tailored to fit a client’s needs, including menu preferences and health concerns like diabetes and allergies. A personal chef will shop for you, cook the meals, package them and leave instructions for re-heating. Cooking classes and cooking parties may also be available.
If you don’t find in-home catering to your taste, there are professional chefs who can provide you with a set menu to choose from and deliver your meals to your home.
I can see these services as being helpful not just to the health-conscious but time-strapped working set, but also to people who have specific health concerns but are not sure how to tailor their diets accordingly, to new parents, to housebound individuals, and to the elderly.
If you’re considering hiring a chef, Belva McKann of the Austin Business Journal suggests that you think about these factors:
…look for one who has culinary training, good references, flexibility, dependability and excellent cooking skills.
And be prepared to factor a chef’s services into your financial budget. How much you pay will depend upon what you’re paying for — food shopping, cooking, delivery and kitchen cleanup.
