Penzeys Spices

by Maricar on May 19th, 2006

Penzeys Spices by Cathy Zielske

I’m a fairly recent spice adventurer.

Let me explain. Growing up, the only spices I was familiar with were fresh garlic, onions, and ginger. Oh, and ground pepper. As I took off on my own and cooked for myself, I “discovered” this whole other world of spices with the most unique names. Cardamom, cumin, star anise. Their flavors and uses mostly escape me. But I’m happy to say that my education in these things has improved.

I graduated from pre-ground pepper to freshly-ground. I now use with some regularity spices and herbs such as oregano, thyme and rosemary (I can’t make my signature spaghetti without them!). I’ve learned to appreciate the contributions paprika can make to a roast.

At first, any old generic bottle of spices would suffice. Then I wanted only McCormick spices, which now have a Gourmet Collection, a step up from their regular spices. Recently, I found out about Penzeys Spices through one of my favorite scrapbookers, Cathy Zielske. And based on her post and her readers’ comments, these spices are out-of-this-world GOOD!

…they carry the best and widest assortment of spices you will find, this side of, moving to another country. See that Chili Powder above? Sublime. SU-BLIME. And the garlic salt? Get out of here. I’m not kidding. GET OUT!

i like to cook. and i like to cook with these spices. they make me very, very happy.

How can spices make anyone that happy? Now I’m curious and I simply want to try them! Penzeys doesn’t have a store near me but online ordering is quick and easy. They even have gift boxes so if anyone wants to send me a pinch (or more!) of these flavors, my pantry’s waiting. :)
