Organizing Pantry Items

Here are some tips for buying and storing items to stock your pantry.
- Arrange items on shelves so that the oldest ones are at the front and most likely to be used first.
- Don’t buy large quantities unless you use the item frequently.
- Write the purchase date on bottles of herbs and spices. Discard any unused portion after one year.
- Use items like baking powder and baking soda before their expiration dates to guarantee effectiveness.
- Write the purchase date on bags of flour. All-purpose flour has a shelf life of 18 to 24 months, according to Pillsbury. Self-rising flour lasts 12 to 18 months.
