On Pressing Matters
When was the last time I did any ironing?
… I can’t even remember. I used to do a fair bit. When my siblings and I were living with our parents, I used to iron everybody’s clothes pretty regularly. If the pile got too high, somebody had to do it, and well, I didn’t mind doing some of it at all. And those days, every piece of clothing got at least a pass with a hot iron. I found it a bit therapeutic, I think… or is that simply because it was such a long time ago, I’d forgotten what a chore I found it? Nah, there was definitely something soothing and satisfying about ironing out wrinkles and getting clothes freshly pressed.
But I abandoned ironing when I started grad school and discovered clothes dryers. Amid all the term papers and reading I had to do, it was easy to let my steam iron gather dust on a high shelf. After all, shirts and jeans folded as they come out of the dryer don’t need pressing. These days, I will press shirts only if they need it.
I only thought of ironing when I read this article in the Towson Times about Ann Solli, who’s also featured in the November issue of Good Housekeeping.
When in search of inner peace or relaxation, some might take a walk in the woods. Or crack open a good book or a bottle of beer. Or maybe take a hot, soaking bath or go bowling.
Ann Solli irons.
Maybe someday, when things are not so hectic, I’ll again pick up my own old Black & Decker and iron away both wrinkles and worries.
Do you iron your clothes? All of them or just some?
