Mudroom Organization
It used to be that we can all do with leaving our dirty shoes just outside the door. Now, a mudroom is more often seen as a necessary and truly desirable feature of a new home. Who wouldn’t want a space designated specifically for catching clutter right at the doorstep?
A well-designed mudroom is exactly that. And here’s what the ideal catch-all room would have:
- shoe cubbies
- cabinets
- wall-mounted hooks for bags, jackets and backpacks
- a bar-height counter for catching and sorting the day’s mail
- hidden space for recycling bins and a waste basket
- built-in power strips for charging phones and other gadgets
- hooks for key rings
- for households with pets, a low-mounted faucet and a shower area for dog-washing; and space for pet food bowls and supplies
If you don’t have an entire room to fulfull these functions, you can still convert some space in your home as your “mudspace”. Ideally, it should be near the entrance your family uses most.
Install hooks on the walls, put in a small bench with some storage and you can make the space work for you. These pieces from L.L. Bean are great idea starters:

prior to moving to montana and opening up a bed and breakfast, i’d never even heard of a mudroom, much less had one.
