Living the Frugal College Life
I don’t know of many college students who can afford not to be frugal. For most, it’s the first time they’re away from home, with mom and dad not being available or willing to provide for everything.
Here are four ways college students can have big savings on campus:
1. Buy used textbooks. Textbooks don’t change much from year to year. If you can get used textbooks, or better yet borrow from upperclassmen you know, you’ll save a lot of money. College bookstores often buy back textbooks at the end of the year, and re-sell these for the new school year, at major discounts.
2. Know your meal options. If your tuition includes meals in university cafeterias, take advantage but remember to choose healthy options to avoid the “Freshman 15″. Cook your own food whenever possible. Most dorms will have a microwave available for student use, and allow small refrigerators in rooms. Keep a box of your favorite cereal and a gallon of milk handy for a quick and inexpensive breakfast before you start your day.
3. Get a roommate. Single-occupancy dorm rooms, while providing privacy, are expensive. Sharing a room with a friend or two also makes your college experience more memorable. To save even more, split the costs for common items such as sofas, lamps and rugs.
4. Use a credit card for emergency purposes only. You’ll be inundated with credit card offers on campus. Avoid the temptation to collect them. Keep one, but only use it for emergency puchases (and I don’t mean an iPod or the latest designer jeans). Make it your goal to repay your balance every month.
