Letting Kids Do Household Chores
I’ve blogged about this before (here and here). Getting kids involved in household chores does much to benefit them later in life. Tequitia Andrews (Richmond Times Dispatch, Richmond, VA) talks from experience about some general guidelines for doing this.
Sometimes you’re set on doing things a certain way. There’s a saying that goes, “If you want it done right, do it yourself.” I had to get out of that mindset, especially after my third child was born. My thoughts then were, “I just want to get it done.”
I am so guilty of this. I sometimes find it hard to let go of how I think things “should be done”. I have had to learn that each person does things a little differently from me. My way is not necessarily the best way. It works for me, but it may not work for another. The important thing is to get the chore done. This is a good thing to remember when we want to involve our household members in housekeeping chores. That is, if we want them to keep doing the dishes, we should allow them to discover their own way of doing it.
