Let the Stars Furnish Your Home
Looks like we’ll be seeing a new set of celebrities attempt to follow in the steps of Martha Stewart.
Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen already have their furniture line. As do Jaclyn Smith, supermodel Kathy Ireland, and for the men, Hall of Famer John Elway and Detroit Red Wings Steve Yzerman (collection available through Art Van). Soon to follow are Hilary Duff and, er, Donald Trump (Trump table, anyone?).
Does it matter that they’re not originally known as mavens of home decor? Apparently not. As long as they hire competent product designers, they should be able to capture a share of the market.
“Teens and tweens aspire to be like Hilary - they are interested in products that are designed and sanctioned by her,” says Robert Thorne, who handles brand management for Duff. “But at the end of the day, it has to be great or terrific, or no amount of celebrity will (be able to) support a successful line.”
One advantage in having these furniture lines for your home is that it will make coordinating a “look” easier than if one goes with a mishmash of furnishings. The quality may just be similar to a non-celebrity-endorsed line, but if it’s the look you want, why not?
A disadvantage? Do I have to say it? Cost, of course. Slapping on a well-known name to ordinary things revs up the price unlike anything else I know.
Would I buy furniture like these? Ummm… I think I’m too old for Mary Kate and Ashley. :)
