Keeping the Castle - Housekeeping & Homemaking Tips

Lessen the Work in Housework

by Maricar on March 1st, 2006

Magic Eraser

While housework will always involve some amount of elbow grease, today’s products make it possible to spend less time than our forebears did in keeping house. We have gadgets and appliances that do the work automatically for us, like the washing machine and more recently, cleaning robots. Other products let us perform chores in a single step, where before it took two or three.

Just a few recently-invented time-savers:

- the Roomba and its improvements

- disposable toilet brushes

- Mr. Clean’s Magic Eraser, which impressed my husband by making short work of erasing crayon marks on our walls

- pre-treated wipes such as those from Clorox and Pledge

- lightweight “brooms” like the Swiffer

But with all of these great products now available, it seems that we want more. Gregg Simmons, reporter for the Cherokee Phoenix, already uses some of these when cleaning house. However…

If Simmons could have a new cleaning gadget invented, he would use a cartoon prototype.

“I just want that robot [Rosie] from the Jetsons that does everything for you!” said Simmons.

Who wouldn’t?
