Know Your Gardening Zone
I once bought some roses because they were free after rebate (who can resist free stuff?). Luckily, before Id even dug the holes in the garden, I read the labels and found out that, had I planted them, they would not have survived the harsh winter. They were not hardy enough for the climate of the U.S. Upper Midwest (no wonder they were free). Good thing I found out before I wasted time and effort on a hopeless endeavor. And yes, I sent in the rebate so nothing was lost really.
Do you know your plant hardiness zone? If you live in a region that has temperature extremes throughout the year, a basic understanding of these zones would help you avoid costly gardening mistakes. Backyardgardener.com has useful information on hardiness zones, including zone maps for the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, China and South America.
Although these zones are only a guide, they are a good starting point in choosing plants for your garden. You could also check out public gardens and local nurseries to find out which plants will grow best in your area.
