How to Wash for Less

by Maricar on March 6th, 2006

While much has already been said about saving money and energy while doing the laundry, here are some more ideas:

1. Reserve the hot water for special uses, such as heavily soiled fabrics and when someone has been ill in your home.

2. Use detergents that contain enzymes. They do the best job.

3. Avoid ironing. “Shake wet clothes out before putting them in the dryer to keep them from balling up and wrinkling. Don’t overstuff the dryer, because that makes clothes dry too slowly and wrinkle, and don’t overdry clothes, because the excessive heat can set wrinkles. As soon as clothes are dry, hang them up or fold them.”

4. Though gas dryers cost more initially than electric ones, they are worth it in the long run.

5. Your washer and dryer don’t have to match. ;)
