How to Remodel Your Kitchen with Less Stress

Who wouldn’t want a dream kitchen? I know I would. From what I’ve read, the kitchen is the most remodeled room in the home. If you’re thinking of doing this, you have to read Matthew M.F. Miller’s 12 tips to get your dream kitchen.
In summary:
- 1. Plan. Know what works for you and what doesn’t. How do you cook? How do you use your current kitchen?
- 2. Make it Task- and Foot-Friendly. Plan work triangles that will make your cooking more efficient. Also consider how traffic flows in and through the room.
- 3. Understand how your plans will look when constructed. Look at 3D representations of your plans. Visit showrooms. Look at actual samples of materials.
- 4. Collect ideas and options. Research your options. Browse magazines for design ideas.
- 5. Maximize storage. Make sure you will have storage space for the items you want to be in your kitchen. Consider your work triangles when plannng storage.
- 6. Keep safety in mind. For example, don’t place an oven next to a hallway where someone could stumble into an open oven door.
- 7. Incorporate lighting into your design. Ambient, task and accent lighting will help you create the right look and mood for your kitchen.
- 8. Prioritize your needs and wants. Your budget and the size of your kitchen will set limits on what you can do. Make a list of what you must absolutely have versus what’s nice to have.
- 9. Set a budget. Don’t blow your finances on this one remodeling project. Stick to your budget when making decisions.
- 10. Give the project enough time to be completed. Be flexible enough to accomodate changes, material delays and other unexpected occurrences.
- 11. Minimize changes. These will increase both cost and time to completion. Put everything in writing before the work begins.
- 12. Prepare ahead of time. Plan for both the actual construction and the incovenience of being without a kitchen while the work is going on.
