How to Pick the Right Washing Machine

by Maricar on February 14th, 2006

Whirlpool Duet Front Load Washer

I know it’s Valentine’s Day and I had to pick a truly mundane topic to write about today. Washing machines. :)

According to Alan Heavens:

If your washing machine is more than 10 years old, it’s time to think about getting a new one. Today’s models not only save water and energy, they’re designed to keep you from making the kind of mistakes that turn your brilliant whites into dull pinks.

My top-loading washing machine isn’t anywhere near 10 years old yet, but I already know that I’ll choose a front loader next time. They’re the next gen in laundry machines. They use less water, and cause less wear and tear on clothes.

This article gives you the lowdown on what you need to know about the difference between front-loading and top-loading models, as well as what questions to ask as you shop around. It also has information on what the different water temperatures are for, and advice for buying and using the machine.

I personally don’t require all the options that new washers offer. Regular, delicate, permapress, jeans, linen, prewash, presoak, wrinkle-free, timer alert, one rinse, two rinses and so on. It gets too confusing. I’m afraid I’ll spend more time thinking about what buttons to press than actually loading the machine. Or maybe a lot of buttons just intimidate me.
