How to Organize Your Closet
Sort and Purge
The very first step to organizing closets is to determine which clothes you still use. To do this at a single go, empty your closet and set up three piles.
Clothes that still fit you and that you still like are keepers.
Clothes that are stained, torn or holey go in the throw-away bin.
Clothes that can still be used, but a) don’t fit you, b) are no longer your style, OR c) you haven’t worn in a year should be donated. Stick to these rules and don’t let your sentimental attachments get the better of you.
Organize Your Space
* Use two or three layers of rods to maximize hanging space for items like shirts, skirts and folded trousers.
* Hang similar items together. Pants with pants, shirts with shirts, skirts with skirts.
* Never use wire hangers for your clothes. Wooden, plastic or padded hangers will protect your clothes and look better in your closet too.
* When installing new shelves, use adjustable ones that you can adapt as your needs change.
* Put low shelves or cubbies on the floor at the base of the closet for storing shoes.
* For storing seasonal items like sweaters and shoes, use see-through plastic bins and put these on high shelves.
* Use see-through containers for storing small items like scarves and gloves.
* Install an over-the-door shoe organizer for additional shoe storage.
* Install hooks on walls for storing belts and other accessories.
* Make sure you have adequate lighting for every area of you closet.

I love stacking hangers. I have some stacking friction hangers that I use for most of my clothing. I try to stack like colors together, and it works really well. I use thinner friction hangers for my dresses, which I don’t stack and which are on a higher rod in the corner.
All my shoes go into clear plastic boxes, one pair in each. I get the boxes for about $1 each at Big Lots and they work great stacked along the floor.
I also have some wire drawers in the closet to hold bras, bags, and lounging about clothes.

Great tips. I also heard a technique for how often you wear your clothes. Face all the clothes on the hangers towards you and turn them around after you wear them. The clothes left at the end of the year still facing you should be donated or thrown away.
