How to Organize a Clutterer’s Paper Clutter

Hanaba Welch, writing for Times Record News, defines clutterers as people who let clutter happen. It’s not deliberate, but it happens. We don’t set out to generate clutter, but somehow, along the way of daily life, clutter appears and stays around.

Regular people do things automatically. Clutterers have to think.

We all want to be organized, but clutterers have to figure things out. We need tools like this Daily Planning Sheet. We have to think about what to do first, how to do it, what we need to do it, and when to do it. Naturally organized people just do it.

For example, clutterers need to be told these four steps for getting rid of paper clutter:

1. Analyze the source of the paper clutter. Why and how does it appear?

2. Sort into two piles: one for keeping and another for recycling/shredding.

3. Classify papers as "active" (those that need action, like bills, etc.) and reference (those that can be filed). Put them in appropriate labeled containers.

4. Create a regular (ie., daily and weekly) de-cluttering routine. Daily tasks may include sorting mail. Weekly activities include filing and paying bills.

Intrinsically organized people don’t even have a paper clutter to deal with. The rest of us have some work to do.
