How to Clean Granite Countertops

Granite countertops add a beautiful touch to kitchens. They’re easy to care for, and are practically unscratchable.
Here are some tips for cleaning a granite countertop, from eHow.com:
- Wipe up spills as quickly as possible to prevent liquids from penetrating the surface.
- Use a soft cloth and a mild soap solution (dishwashing soap is OK) or a stone cleaner to clean the counter.
- To remove a stain, mix a cup of flour, 1-2 tablespoons of dishwashing liquid and some water to make a thick paste. Apply the paste to the stain, cover with plastic wrap and leave overnight. Scrape off the paste with a wooden utensil and rinse the surface.
- For oil-based stains, use hydrogen peroxide instead of dishwashing liquid.
- Ink or wine stains on dark-colored granite can be removed with a lacquer thinner or acetone. On lighter stones, use hydrogen peroxide.

I work for a home builder and it is very important to know not to use anything acidic such as windex, 409, or vinegar to clean the granite surface. It can strip the sealer off.
