Housekeeping Reminder: Check Your Smoke Detectors

by Maricar on February 1st, 2006

Just a friendly reminder to all you wonderful readers to check that the smoke detectors in your home are working properly.

There is no single greater means of preventing fire fatalities than a home smoke detector. The devices are inexpensive to buy and simple to install. In the case of a fire, a smoke detector will provide your family with an early warning signal. This extra time could be the minutes you and your family need to escape.

Most newer homes have smoke detectors on every level, including the basement, and an additional one in each bedroom. It is recommended that the devices must be checked once a month, and the batteries replaced once a year.

The detector in our kitchen usually goes off when I’m broiling something in the oven. Even though it gets annoying, I never turn it off or take the batteries out. I’m really afraid I’ll forget to turn it back on. It’s best to just wave a towel near it until the alarm goes off.
