Great Gardening Tips

Long-time gardeners have tricks of the trade that are sometimes not commonly known. These are learned through the years and passed on to family and friends. When the information is available online, I’m glad that I don’t have to spend years to find them out. I’m always surprised at the creativity and wisdom behind these hints.
Here’s a sampling from Bob Johnson of the Free Press:
* If you grow your garden plants from seed, try planting your seed in eggshell halves. When ready to transplant, break the shell and plant it with the seedling. Eggshells serve as a natural fertilizer.
* When dividing plants that have entangled roots, place in water and they will float apart after a short period of time. This is especially good for daylilies.
* My wife always is on me about the green stains on my hands from gardening. I read somewhere that a teaspoon of sugar added to a soapy lather will remove the stain. It works.
* Petroleum jelly or WD40 will prevent slugs getting to plants in containers. Smear the bottom of the pot on the outside.
