Keeping the Castle - Housekeeping & Homemaking Tips

Google Cooking

by Maricar on January 26th, 2006

Google
I never thought Google could function as a cookbook, but it makes perfect sense. It’s an online go-to reference for putting together whatever ingredients are currently available to you. It’s easy to use. Just type in your ingredients and the word “recipes” and presto, you’ve got yourself a list to choose from. Some of the recipes might be outlandish, but you might get lucky, as did Judy Hourihan.

“Every night I would rummage around my kitchen for something to eat and then go in the back room to look through cookbooks,” said Hourihan, a former Massachusetts software engineer who is considered the pioneer of Google cooking. “Then I thought, ‘Why am I looking through cookbooks when I can just sit at my computer and Google it?’ ”

The term “Google cooking” was coined in 2002, after Hourihan gained media attention with her salmon and Swiss chard success.

To make the most of Google’s aid in your cooking:
- Be specific in your search.
- Limit the ingredients you type in. Putting in too many will rarely result in a recipe that includes all the ingredients.
- Always type in “recipes”, and if possible, your preferred cooking method (eg., “grilled”).
- Try singular and plural forms of words.
