Keeping the Castle - Housekeeping & Homemaking Tips

Frugal Living in the News

by Maricar on November 12th, 2005

This week’s news included two articles about how to live a little less expensively.

“When cheap is a way of life” by Melinda Fulmer of MSN Money shares tips from 3 women who consider “cheapskate” to be a badge of honor. One of the women is Mary Hunt, author of “Live Your Life for Half the Price” and “Everyday Cheapskate’s Greatest Tips”. She also has a website, CheapskateMonthly, where she shares money-saving tips.

Some of what these women share are well-known practices in saving money, such as packing your own lunches, using grocery coupons and eating out less often. But you’ll also read read tips like making your own laundry soap and re-dyeing jeans to make them look new. It’s all about choosing wisely what you’ll spend your money on.

But most important, Hunt said, is figuring out what things in your life are most important to you and saving your money for these things.

Valentina Zic’s Needham Times article, “Just don’t call her cheap”, is about a radio show in the New England area. Called “The Frugal Yankee Radio Hour”, the show is hosted by Louise Sacco and media maven Garen Daly of New Hampshire. In spite of the title, the show is “not just about spending less money. It’s also about living a good life.”

“The philosophy is spending less and enjoying life more,” Sacco said.
Each episode of the show gives listeners new advice on how to live a frugal - and better -lifestyle. It also focuses on how to do that in New England in particular, hence the show’s title.

If you’re in New England, you can catch “The Frugal Yankee Radio Hour” on Sundays at 1 p.m. on 1550AM.
