Focusing on One Task at a Time
I like to think that the ability to multitask is an asset in homemaking. It’s great to be able to do the laundry, cook dinner, and pick up after kids all at the same time, right?
Sometimes, though, I have a nagging suspicion that I may be able to accomplish more if I focus on just one task at a time. Sometimes, I find myself so easily distracted that I’m running off to do a second thing right in the middle of doing the first thing. Do you know what I mean?
How many times in a day do you stop to pick up a wayward object on your way to cleaning the bathroom, and then find yourself doing a detour to pick up other wayward objects and put them in their storage places? Wouldn’t it be more efficient to ignore the clutter for now, and proceed with the task at hand (ie., bathroom cleaning)?
I might be able to not only save time but also keep my mind less cluttered with the thoughts of all the things that need to be done. Focusing on only one task at a time means that I will do that job well, and finish it before I start another one.
Where to start? Zen Habits has some tips on how not to multi-task.
