Dorm Room Concierge Service, Anyone?
Starting next fall, some of Arizona State University’s students are going to get housekeeping options in their dorm rooms. In addition to laundry and water-delivery services that are already available through Valet Today, the company will also offer biweekly housekeeping.
Talk about a pampered college experience. My impression is that college is supposed to be the first step for many young people towards independent living. College is surely not just about earning a degree. Part of the learning experience that this stage of life can offer is the chance to look after one’s self and to manage the day-to-day demands of living. And, in my opinion, that includes being able to juggle classes, jobs and personal housekeeping.
From the students’ point of view, having someone do their chores for them is certainly a nice luxury. Even if they (or their parents) can afford these services now, what about after graduation? They may suddenly find out that they don’t know how to use a vacuum cleaner. It’s well and good if they can afford to continue having housekeepers. But if not, wouldn’t it be better if they know how to do it for themselves?

I can see your point, Maricar, and would generally agree. But, having lived in Asia for several years now and seeing the many families who employ domestic helpers has made me think that we’re raising a generation of kids who won’t know how to do basic home care.
We grew up without helpers, but my sister and I weren’t asked to do more than simple dusting and vacuuming. Still, when the time came, we figured it out. If a person has tidy tendencies, they will learn how to clean up after themselves if no one is there to do it for them.

Hi Lei, I’m not against having help around the house if you can get it, but you said it well: "raising…kids who won’t know how to do basic home care". College is certainly not the last chance to learn these things, but it’s a good place and time to start. :)
