Dinosaur Cake

It had to be a stegosaurus. My son is very much into dinosaurs, and his most favorite of all is the stegosaurus. I was originally planning to stick some dinosaur toys on top of a 2-layer round cake and call it done. But I came across this site, Coolest-Birthday-Cakes, which had wonderful instructions for creating a stegosaurus cake using the same 2 layers of 8-inch cakes.

The cake mix was the Duncan Hines Yellow Cake mix with Ener-G Egg Replacer, instead of real eggs. The frosting was 1 1/2 tubs of Duncan Hines French Vanilla frosting, colored with green and brown concentrated cake coloring from Wilton. The light brown things were roasted coconut flakes. For the plates on the dinosaur’s back, I colored some saltine crackers with the brown icing. Not as pretty as the original one, which used small Oreo cookies, but entirely milk- and egg-free!

Here’s the cake after the party. Obviously, we all liked it well enough. :)
