Decorating for Two

How do you marry one decorating style with another that’s completely different? What do you do to combine, for example, a sports fan’s collection of memorabilia with a shabby chic approach to home decor?
It’s challenging but not impossible. Take some lessons from Alison Alfandre’s piece on “Decorating for Two: How to combine styles even when they’re worlds apart“.
She tackles three situations:
1. Sports fan marries art lover
2. Modern edge marries vintage country
3. Minimalist marries clutterbug
She offers some really practical tips on how to go about it. In short, the approach is that “there’s a place for everything, just perhaps not together”. The styles don’t have to mix all the time. Pick different rooms to showcase each style. Or, combine them in subtle ways, where no one style predominates. Whichever way you choose, there will be a compromise somewhere that will satisfy both senses of style.
Enjoy your decorating challenge and happy homemaking!
