Cooking the Perfect Beef Stew

by Maricar on March 1st, 2007

Beef stew is a simple dish, but there are tips and tricks to making it perfect. Here are some suggestions:

  • Beef chuck roast proved to be the most flavorful, tender and juicy for making stew, in a comparison of 12 cuts of meat. This is according to the revised edition of “The America’s Test Kitchen Family Cookbook” (aff).
  • Buy whole cuts of beef and cut it up into small pieces for the stew. Prepackaged stewing beef may be made up of irregularly-shaped pieces from various cuts, resulting in varying textures and flavors.
  • Brown the meat in a heavy-bottomed pan such as a Dutch oven.
  • Try adding paprika to your stew recipe.
