Consumer Report on Outlet Protectors
ConsumerReports.org rated several brands and models of outlet plugs, which are devices designed to keep young children from inserting objects into electrical outlets. The site judged two such plugs, both made by Safety 1st, as “not acceptable“. The first plug, a simple outlet cap, was found to be small enough to be a possible choking hazard. The second, a swivel-type outlet cover, was deemed as not completely effective in protecting against electrical shocks.
I was surprised to see these two devices listed in the “What NOT to buy” category, since they are very commonly used. The outlet cap, in particular, is the type that supermarkets carry them more often than not.
Consumer Reports recommends the following products: Mommy’s Helper Safe-Plate Safety Outlet Cover and KidCo S200 Decora Outlet Cover. They also have comments on other types of outlet protectors. I’d love to pick up one of these but for some reason, they are not as readily available as the ones from Safety 1st. I don’t remember seeing them at my local supermarket. But they’re available online at Amazon.com and Babyunivese.com.
