College Essentials
I figured I’d continue with the college theme today with a list of items that can help students as they manage their home-away-from-home. I modified this from a list at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer:
* Basic Tool Kit - You’ll need at least a screwdriver to assemble shelves and other furniture. You might even boost your popularity if you’re the go-to guy on your floor for useful tools.
* Command adhesive strips or hooks from 3M, instead of screws and nails, for hanging your favorite wall decorations and for keeping items like bags and belts organized.
* Alarm clock - The article lists an iPod port, but somehow I don’t consider that essential. ;)
* Favorite bedding from home - Just to make the transition easier.
* Desk lamp - Dorm rooms usually have overhead lights only, which will not be enough for all the studying you have to do.
* Shower shoes - Flip flops work best. Make sure you have one just for the shower.
* Fan - Air-conditioning may not be sufficient during hot days. It may not even be available in some dorms.
* Over-the-door organizers - Maximize your storage space by the area behind the door. Another storage option is an underbed container.
* Mini refrigerator - For those late-night snacks and for storing healthy staples like milk and fruit.
* Collapsible laundry baskets - If you have the space for it get one that allows you to sort clothes.
* A Swiffer or rubber broom - Once in while, cleaning is a must, even for dorm rooms.
