Bagged Spinach in the Hot Seat
I just got back from the grocery today, after being holed up with 2 kids at home, due to a combination of a bout with the cold and some wet weather earlier this week. I always end my grocery shopping at the fresh produce section, and what do you know, there was not a bag of fresh spinach in sight. The usual displays of the green veggies were replaced by printed notices of a warning from the FDA about a serious outbreak of E. coli that may be associated with bagged spinach.
The FDA is not saying that the spinach is what caused the death of one person and the illness of many others in several states. It is the likely carrier of the bug, but they don’t know for sure. The prudent thing to do is to avoid the product until the FDA and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention pinpoint the source.
If you really can’t stay away from spinach for the time being, my suggestion is to buy locally grown produce, wash it well and cook it thoroughly.

Wow, even the spinach isn’t safe. My edible food groups are getting narrower.

[…] There have been a number of news updates since I blogged about the FDA warning about the E. coli outbreak that has been linked to bagged spinach. Rather than rehash the news, I’ll point you over to an excellent ongoing discussion by Kate Hopkins at the Accidental Hedonist. Kate is on top of the news, with a list of the brands supplied by Natural Selection Foods, which has recalled all the spinach that they pack. There’s also a Spinach/E. coli FAQ that I find very informative. […]

[…] A couple of months ago, spinach was in the news as the carrier of a deadly E. coli strain. Another kind of fresh produce is making headlines now. Scallions, or green onions, are suspected in a recent E. coli outbreak. […]
