A General Plan for Celebrating the Seasons

“Do not delay; the golden moments fly!” So said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. That’s exactly how I feel these days. Time is flying by so quickly. I can’t believe that we’re almost at the end of October. Halloween will come soon, then Thanksgiving at its heels, followed by Christmas and Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. For the more organized among us, this is the time to start making lists, and even think about the Christmas baking, like Marye already does over at Baking Delights.

Me, I don’t have even one list yet. No Christmas card list. No baking list. I haven’t thought of food or decorations or anything. But I’m starting to think about how the seasons are changing. I like to go from general planning to more specific, as the seasons progress. Here’s my general plan for making sure that the coming seasons are the best I could make them to be:

H - Have lots of quality time with loved ones.

O - Owe nothing new. One of the worst ways to end a year and start the new one is with new debt.

L - Let the kids help. Whether it’s picking out pumpkins, or decorating the Christmas tree, kids want to be involved too.

I - Invite someone who otherwise might have to spend time alone.

D - Decorate the home. Even just a few touches of season-specific items will add a great deal to the festive atmosphere.

A - Appreciate the little things more, like the brilliant colors of fall, and the smell of fresh pine.

Y - Yield and let life slow down a bit. Avoid rushing around too much.

S - Share with those who are less fortunate.

Are you thinking of Christmas yet? Are you an advance planner or a last-minute kind of homemaker?
